Bursaries
Social Mobility
Framlingham College has a long and proud history of supporting pupils through means-tested bursaries. This was evident even at its foundation in 1864 when it was stipulated that the College should always have six Pembroke Scholars, pupils who would not be able to attend otherwise. These bursaries continue to this day. However, we want to do more.
Today in the UK, a staggering four million children live in poverty and as a society we are experiencing a widening socio economic divide. We feel it is a moral imperative that we do more to support social mobility and deliver more positive outcomes. Not only does a lack of social equality undermine social cohesion, it continues to be the root cause for an unforgiveable waste of talent and potential.
Sixth Form Bursaries
Above and beyond the Pembroke Scholarship, the Framlingham College Bursary Campaign, supported by the Society of Old Framlinghamians, will provide as many Sixth Form bursaries as it can to deserving pupils. This is a long-term campaign which will allow us to provide an increasing number of young people with the opportunity to live and learn at our inspirational school. In year one(September 2022), we will provide at lease one additional Sixth Form bursary place. In year three (September 2024) we hope to increase that to at least two additional bursary places. In year five (September 2026) at least five places and so on.
We encourage everybody associated with the College community to get behind this campaign. Your gift, however large or small, will help make a real difference. Together, we can transform the lives of young people. Our community is global and includes a huge variety of people who will be able to relate to our campaign.
Jules and Michelle Arthur Bursary Fund
OF (K'84) Jules and Michele Arthur have supported the Framlingham College Bursary Campaign from the outset through their kind and generous annual donations. In addition, they have facilitated the creation of a bursary fund to support our current and future recipients. This allows the pupils who benefit from their generous support to have the confidence that they can fully immerse themselves in the life of the College without ever having to be anxious about being unable to pay for music lessons, educational trips, the odd boarding night and all of the other ‘extras’ that might otherwise limit their educational experience.
Going to Framlingham was the education that my family wanted to provide me with but were unable to. The experience broadened my horizons, pushed me and pushed my expectations of myself. I thrived with the education I was provided with and now find myself in a job that I love. I also discovered my love for shooting at Framlingham and now shoot for Ireland and am Captain of the Suffolk Rifle Team.
- Kimberly Pope, Bursary recipient & Property Manager at Knight Frank
A scholarship allowed me the opportunity to study at the College and have access to some excellent facilities. In particular, I spent a lot of time in the recording studio trying things out - and the pianos here are amazing! But more importantly, the staff here are truly brilliant; their support and encouragement was invaluable as I worked at both my playing and writing throughout my Sixth Form years. I'm very grateful for that.
- Jack Gionis, Bursary recipient & Scholar at the Royal College of Music
I received an outstanding education and was able to pull together a strong university application so that I could continue Japanese and German at higher education. Without my bursary, it wouldn't have been possible for me to learn so much and ultimately achieve my goal of working for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
- Tori Aldred, Bursary recipient & currently working at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
